Triptych of Foot Perspectives (2021) – Johannes Bellinkx
Johannes Bellinkx is an artist educated as a social geographer and a physical performer based in The Netherlands. His work balances between performance, live cinema, visual art and sound art.
In my work I try to question our perceptive systems and the (re)construction of our surroundings in our brain. In my previous works I tried to question this by offering literally different perspectives (Reverse) or creating new conditions or frames (Framing and Continuum) through which we could see our surroundings. Even though I design real live experiences there is always an important cinematic element in the work without using any camera’s or projection. Triptych of Foot Perspectives is my first video work in which I could explore my curiosity about how the world would look like if our eyes were in our feet and what if these eyes looked in opposite directions?
Just like Framing and Reverse I deliberately chose public space as ‘surrounding’ for this work. Public space is so common and quotidian to us that it offers a strong point of reference. Apart from the new perspectives I am trying to offer, there is an important physical element. How can the camera movement communicate the physicality of a moving foot? What does it say about us moving or the world around us moving?
